A brief History

Makers Mark, Kentucky Region, USA. Founded in 1953.

Maker’s Mark is one of the most recognisable bourbons in the world. The red wax dripping down the neck of the bottle has become a symbol of Kentucky whiskey. But the story behind it is surprisingly personal.

The brand was created in 1953 by Bill Samuels Sr., who wanted to make a smoother bourbon than the heavier, rye-forward styles common at the time. Instead of rye in the mash bill, Maker’s Mark uses red winter wheat, which softens the flavour and gives the whisky a rounder, sweeter profile.

The distillery sits in Loretto, Kentucky, and production still follows the same basic recipe developed in the 1950s. Even today, each bottle is still dipped by hand in the signature red wax seal.

Maker’s Mark built its reputation on consistency and approachability — bourbon that’s smooth enough for newcomers but still satisfying for experienced drinkers.

Taste Profile

Oaky / Woody

Rich / Chocolatey Sweet

Maker’s Mark is known for its soft, rounded character. The use of wheat in the mash bill reduces sharp spice and emphasises sweetness instead.

Expect notes of vanilla and caramel up front, followed by honey and gentle oak. The texture is smooth and slightly creamy, with a warm but controlled finish.

It’s not an aggressive bourbon. It’s designed to be balanced and easy to drink, whether neat, over ice, or in classic cocktails.

Distillery Facts

Overview & History

Maker’s Mark is a Kentucky bourbon brand founded in 1953 by Bill Samuels Sr. in Loretto, Kentucky. Samuels set out to create a smoother, more approachable bourbon by altering the traditional mash bill used by most Kentucky distillers.

Instead of using rye as the secondary grain, Maker’s Mark replaced it with wheat. This decision created a softer style that would later become known as wheated bourbon.

The brand quickly became known for its distinctive hand-dipped red wax seal, which remains one of the most recognisable packaging features in the whisky world. Today, Maker’s Mark is owned by Beam Suntory.

Production

  • Category: Kentucky Straight Bourbon

  • Mash Bill: Corn, wheat, and malted barley (no rye)

  • Distillation: Column still followed by a doubler

  • Barrels: New charred American oak

  • Warehouse Style: Lower, wider rickhouses to moderate temperature extremes

The use of wheat instead of rye results in a softer flavour profile with less spice.

Maker’s Mark also rotates barrels during maturation to maintain consistency across batches.

Whisky Style

Maker’s Mark typically shows:

  • Soft, sweet corn base

  • Vanilla and caramel

  • Honey and butterscotch

  • Gentle oak

  • Smooth, rounded finish

Compared with rye-based bourbons, the flavour is sweeter and less spicy.

Key Expressions

  • Maker’s Mark – Core wheated bourbon

  • Maker’s Mark 46 – Finished with seared French oak staves for extra spice

  • Maker’s Mark Cask Strength – Higher proof, richer intensity

  • Maker’s Mark Private Select – Custom barrel finishing programme

Maker’s Mark 46 was one of the first major examples of secondary wood finishing in bourbon.

Significance

Maker’s Mark helped define the wheated bourbon style, which later influenced other famous releases such as Weller and Pappy Van Winkle.

The brand is also notable for its strong identity and consistency. Its distinctive red wax seal and focus on smoothness made it one of the most recognisable premium bourbon brands globally.
