A brief History

Mannochmore, Speyside Region, Scotland. Founded in 1971.

Mannochmore Distillery is one of those Speyside distilleries that quietly does a lot of work without drawing much attention to itself. It sits just outside Elgin in Moray, and it was built in 1971 during a period when Scotch whisky demand was rising quickly.

From the start, Mannochmore was designed to supply malt whisky for blends rather than to stand out as a single malt brand. It has long been linked to the Haig blends, and even today, most of what it produces disappears into blended Scotch.

That said, Mannochmore has had a few moments in the spotlight. The most talked-about was the release of Loch Dhu in the 1990s — a very dark whisky that became more of a curiosity than a classic. More recently, official releases like the Flora & Fauna bottling have given people a clearer idea of what the distillery can do.

It’s not a headline distillery, but it’s a reliable Speyside workhorse with a clean, approachable style.

Taste Profile

Malty / Cereal Fruity Sweet

Mannochmore produces a light and balanced Speyside spirit. You’ll usually get orchard fruit notes like apple and pear, backed up by soft honey sweetness.

There’s also a clear malty character — think biscuit and cereal — with gentle vanilla coming through from the cask. It’s not a heavy whisky, and there’s no peat to speak of. Instead, it’s all about clean flavours and an easy finish.

Most Popular Bottles

Mannochmore 12 Year Old (Flora & Fauna)
The best-known official release and a good example of the distillery’s style.

Loch Dhu 10 Year Old
A dark, unusual whisky released in the 1990s, now mostly a collector’s curiosity.

Independent Bottlings
Occasional releases from independent bottlers, sometimes showing different cask styles.

Most Mannochmore whisky is still used in blends rather than bottled on its own.

Distillery Facts

Overview & History

Mannochmore Distillery is located near Elgin in Speyside and was founded in 1971 by Distillers Company Limited (now part of Diageo). It was built during a period of strong demand for blended Scotch whisky to increase production capacity.

The distillery shares its site with Glenlossie Distillery, and the two have historically alternated production depending on demand.

Mannochmore gained brief notoriety in the 1990s with the release of Loch Dhu, a black-coloured whisky that became one of the more unusual experiments in Scotch whisky history.

Production

  • Spirit Type: Single malt Scotch whisky

  • Stills: Six copper pot stills

  • Water Source: Bardon Burn

  • Cask Policy: Predominantly ex-bourbon maturation

  • Primary Role: Supplying malt whisky for blends (including Diageo blends)

The distillery is designed for efficiency and consistency rather than large-scale single malt branding.

Whisky Style

Mannochmore whisky typically shows:

  • Light to medium body

  • Fresh malt sweetness

  • Orchard fruit (apple, pear)

  • Light grassy notes

  • Soft vanilla and oak

The style is clean and balanced, making it well suited for blending.

Key Expressions

  • Mannochmore 12 Year Old (Flora & Fauna) – Main official bottling

  • Independent bottlings from various vintages

  • Loch Dhu (1990s) – Rare experimental release

Most Mannochmore whisky is not released as official single malt.

Significance

Mannochmore is an example of a blending-focused Speyside distillery, forming part of the backbone of Diageo’s blended Scotch portfolio.

Although relatively low-profile as a single malt, it has gained interest among enthusiasts through independent bottlings and its unusual Loch Dhu release.
