A brief History

Millburn, Highlands Region, Scotland. Founded in 1807.

Millburn Distillery was one of three distilleries that once operated in the city of Inverness, alongside Glen Mhor and Glen Albyn. Founded in 1807, it stood on the banks of the River Ness and produced Highland malt whisky for nearly two centuries.

For much of its history, Millburn worked quietly behind the scenes. Like many Scottish distilleries, most of its spirit went into blended whisky rather than being bottled as a single malt. Because of this, official releases were relatively rare while the distillery was operating.

Millburn finally closed in 1985 during a period when several Scottish distilleries were shutting down due to declining demand. The buildings were later converted for other use, and the original distilling equipment was removed.

Today, Millburn survives only through a small number of old casks and vintage bottlings. For collectors and enthusiasts, these bottles offer a glimpse into a lost Highland distillery.

Taste Profile

Malty / Cereal

Fruity Oaky / Woody

Millburn whisky typically shows a classic Highland profile. Orchard fruits such as apple and pear appear alongside honeyed sweetness and a gentle malt backbone.

With extended ageing, the whisky develops deeper oak influence and richer texture. Some older bottlings reveal tropical fruit notes and a waxy character that many collectors find particularly appealing.

Peat was never a dominant feature of the distillery’s style, and the whisky tends to lean toward balance rather than intensity.

Distillery Facts

Overview & History

Millburn Distillery was located in Inverness in the Scottish Highlands and was founded in 1807. It was one of three historic distilleries that once operated in Inverness, alongside Glen Mhor and Glen Albyn.

For much of its life, Millburn produced whisky primarily for blends. The distillery was eventually mothballed in 1985 during the major Scotch whisky industry downturn of the 1980s. The site was later redeveloped and the distillery buildings demolished.

Millburn is now considered a closed distillery.

Production

  • Spirit Type: Single malt Scotch whisky

  • Stills: Traditional copper pot stills

  • Cask Policy: Mainly ex-bourbon maturation with occasional sherry casks

  • Production Role: Primarily blending stock

The distillery operated on a relatively small scale and did not maintain a large official single malt range during its operational years.

Whisky Style

Millburn whisky is generally described as:

  • Medium-bodied Highland style

  • Honey and malt sweetness

  • Citrus and light orchard fruit

  • Gentle spice and oak

  • Slightly dry finish

Older bottlings often show elegant maturation with subtle complexity rather than heavy sherry influence.

Key Expressions

  • Millburn 35 Year Old – Rare aged official release

  • Independent bottlings from the 1960s–1980s

  • Occasional vintage releases from specialist bottlers

Because the distillery closed in 1985, all remaining whisky comes from limited historical casks.

Significance

Millburn forms part of the lost whisky heritage of Inverness. All three of the city’s historic distilleries closed during the late 20th century industry contraction.

As a closed distillery, Millburn whisky has become collectible, particularly older independent bottlings that showcase a classic Highland style no longer produced.
