A brief History

Monkey Shoulder, Speyside Region, Scotland. Founded in 2005.

Monkey Shoulder is a Scotch whisky brand that was built with one clear purpose: make malt whisky easier to enjoy. It’s not tied to a single distillery. Instead, it’s a blended malt Scotch, meaning it combines single malts from several Speyside distilleries.

The brand is owned by William Grant & Sons, the company behind Glenfiddich and Balvenie. Monkey Shoulder was originally created to be a versatile whisky for bartenders — something rich enough to stand out in cocktails but smooth enough to drink neat.

The name comes from a piece of whisky history. “Monkey shoulder” was once a condition suffered by maltmen who turned barley by hand during the malting process. The repetitive motion could strain the shoulder muscles, causing a slight droop. While modern distilleries no longer malt barley this way, the name remains a playful reference to traditional whisky-making.

Today Monkey Shoulder has become one of the most popular blended malts in the world, particularly in bars and cocktail culture.

Taste Profile

Malty / Cereal

Fruity Sweet

Monkey Shoulder is known for being smooth and approachable. The Speyside malts used in the blend create a flavour profile that leans toward vanilla sweetness, soft caramel, and honey.

Orchard fruit and malt biscuit notes sit underneath, giving the whisky a warm, rounded character. There is no peat smoke in the style, and the finish is soft and slightly sweet.

The balance makes it particularly well suited for cocktails like the Old Fashioned or Whisky Sour, while still working well neat or over ice.

Overview & History

Monkey Shoulder is a blended malt Scotch whisky introduced by William Grant & Sons in 2005. The brand was designed to create a versatile Scotch whisky aimed particularly at the cocktail and bar market.

The name “Monkey Shoulder” references a historic injury suffered by maltmen who manually turned germinating barley during floor malting. The repetitive motion sometimes caused a temporary shoulder condition known informally as “monkey shoulder.”

The brand deliberately adopted a modern identity, distinguishing itself from traditional Scotch whisky marketing.

Production

  • Category: Blended malt Scotch whisky (malt whiskies only, no grain whisky)

  • Blending: Combination of Speyside single malts

  • Core Components: Often reported to include malts from Glenfiddich, Balvenie, and Kininvie

  • Cask Policy: Primarily ex-bourbon maturation

The blend is designed to produce a consistent, approachable profile suitable for mixing while remaining balanced enough for neat drinking.

Whisky Style

Monkey Shoulder typically shows:

  • Sweet malt base

  • Vanilla and honey

  • Light citrus and orchard fruit

  • Soft spice

  • Smooth, easy finish

The flavour profile is deliberately accessible and balanced rather than intense or heavily cask-driven.

Key Expressions

  • Monkey Shoulder Original – Core blended malt expression

  • Monkey Shoulder Smokey Monkey – Peated variant (limited markets)

  • Special bartender-focused editions and limited releases

The original expression remains the primary product globally.

Significance

Monkey Shoulder helped reposition Scotch whisky for modern cocktail culture. At a time when Scotch was often associated with traditional neat drinking, the brand actively targeted bartenders and mixologists.

Its success demonstrated that blended malt Scotch could function as a premium cocktail whisky, helping Scotch compete more effectively with bourbon and rye in the global bar scene.
