A brief History
Mosstowie, Speyside Region, Scotland. Founded in 1960s.
Mosstowie is one of those unusual names in Scotch whisky history that only appears if you look closely. It was not a separate distillery, but a different style of whisky produced at Miltonduff Distillery in Speyside.
The story begins in the 1960s, when the distillery experimented with a special type of distillation equipment known as Lomond stills. These stills allowed distillers to adjust plates inside the neck of the still, changing how the spirit condensed and giving them more control over flavour.
Using this equipment, Miltonduff produced a new spirit style that was bottled under the name Mosstowie. Production ran from around 1964 until the early 1980s, when the Lomond stills were removed and the distillery returned to its standard pot still setup.
Today Mosstowie survives only through a handful of old casks and rare independent bottlings.

Mosstowie whiskies typically show a classic Speyside character. Expect orchard fruit notes such as apple and pear, supported by honeyed sweetness and soft vanilla from oak maturation.
The spirit often feels light and elegant, with a clean malt backbone and gentle spice in the finish. There is no peat influence in the style, and older bottlings tend to show well-developed fruit and polished oak notes.

Distillery Facts
Overview & History
Mosstowie was a distinctive style of single malt Scotch whisky produced at Miltonduff Distillery between 1964 and 1981. It was created using a special type of distillation equipment known as a Lomond still.
The aim was to produce a different spirit character from the same distillery by adjusting reflux levels and distillation behaviour. This experiment formed part of a broader industry effort during the mid-20th century to increase flavour diversity without building new distilleries.
Production of Mosstowie ended in 1981 when the Lomond stills were removed and Miltonduff returned to conventional pot still production.
Production
-
Spirit Type: Single malt Scotch whisky
-
Distillery: Miltonduff Distillery
-
Stills: Lomond stills with adjustable plates in the neck
-
Production Period: 1964–1981
-
Cask Policy: Mostly ex-bourbon maturation
Lomond stills allowed operators to adjust internal plates to control reflux, effectively modifying the character of the spirit.
Despite the technical flexibility, the design proved difficult to maintain and was eventually abandoned.
Whisky Style
Mosstowie is generally described as:
-
Light to medium-bodied
-
Clean malt character
-
Honey and vanilla sweetness
-
Fresh orchard fruit
-
Slightly grassy, delicate finish
Compared with standard Miltonduff spirit, Mosstowie often showed a slightly lighter, more aromatic style.
Key Expressions
Mosstowie was never widely marketed as an official brand during production. Most surviving bottles come from:
-
Independent bottlers
-
Vintage releases from the 1960s and 1970s
-
Occasional cask-strength bottlings
Because production ended in 1981, all remaining stock is finite.
Significance
Mosstowie represents one of the more unusual technical experiments in Scotch whisky production. The Lomond still system attempted to create multiple spirit styles within one distillery through mechanical adjustment rather than new still shapes.
Although the concept did not survive long-term, Mosstowie remains historically interesting and collectible, illustrating a period of experimentation within the Scotch industry.
