A brief History
Mount Gay, Barbados. Founded in 1703.
Mount Gay is widely recognised as the oldest rum distillery in the world, with a history that dates back to 1703 on the island of Barbados. While most distilleries focus on whisky or brandy, Mount Gay has spent more than three centuries refining its craft in rum production.
The distillery is located in St. Lucy Parish, at the northern end of Barbados. Its long history reflects the island’s deep connection to sugar production and rum distillation. Barbados was one of the earliest places where rum was produced commercially, and Mount Gay played a major role in shaping that tradition.
Today the distillery combines historic methods with modern production. Both traditional copper pot stills and column stills are used to create different styles of rum, which are then matured in oak barrels. The warm Caribbean climate speeds up the maturation process, giving the rum rich flavour even after relatively short ageing periods.

Mount Gay rums are known for their balance between sweetness and oak character. Vanilla and caramel notes often appear early, followed by warming spice and gentle wood influence from barrel ageing.
The texture tends to be smooth and rounded, with hints of dried fruit, toasted oak, and subtle spice developing in older expressions. The tropical climate in Barbados helps create richer flavours in a shorter time compared with cooler whisky regions.
