A brief History

Murray Mcdavid, Scotland. Founded in 1985

Bold Finishes, Brave Choices – Welcome to the Art of Maturation

Let’s get one thing straight — Murray McDavid is not your average independent bottler. They’ve made a name by doing things a little differently. Born in 1996, this team of whisky makers decided early on that their style would be all about the finish. Not just how a whisky ends on your tongue — but what kind of cask it finishes its life in.

From Pedro Ximénez and Port, to rum and Tokaji (yes, really), Murray McDavid isn’t afraid to push the boundaries. Their whiskies are carefully matured and then "ACE’d" — short for Additional Cask Enhancement — to bring out unexpected flavours in familiar drams. Today, they work from the historic Coleburn Distillery site in Speyside, selecting, finishing and bottling whisky with flair, precision, and just a little swagger.

Whether it’s a single malt mystery or a complex grain whisky blend, there’s a sense of craft and creativity in every bottle.

Taste Profile

Spicy

Fruity

Rich / Chocolatey

Murray McDavid has built its entire identity around flavour exploration. That means their whiskies tend to be big, bold, and layered — no water-downed supermarket-style blends here. Expect complexity, sweetness, and spice, with lots of influence from exotic wine and fortified casks.

Murray McDavid is renowned for its rich, full-flavoured whiskies. The bottler is particularly famous for its bold use of wine and fortified casks, which bring layers of sweetness, spice, and depth to the final product. Key flavour characteristics include:

  • Sherry-soaked raisins and Christmas cake

  • Clove, nutmeg, and warm baking spice

  • Smooth cocoa and dark chocolate notes

  • Sweet oak and a touch of dried citrus

Here’s a look at the types of whiskies they release, across different ranges. Every bottle is small-batch or single cask, so expect lots of change from year to year — which is all part of the fun.

At the moment, Murray McDavid doesn’t operate a public visitor centre. However, they regularly attend whisky festivals and sometimes host special tastings and events around the UK — occasionally on a beautifully restored wooden boat moored in Glasgow. Seriously.

Keep an eye out — their team is known for being down-to-earth, passionate, and great at pouring generous samples.
