A brief History

Nikka, Japan. Founded in 1934.

Nikka is one of the most important names in Japanese whisky. The company was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, a man often called the father of Japanese whisky. Taketsuru studied whisky production in Scotland in the early 1900s before returning to Japan with the goal of recreating authentic Scotch-style whisky using Japanese ingredients and climate.

The first Nikka distillery was built in Yoichi, Hokkaido, chosen because its cool climate and coastal environment reminded Taketsuru of Scotland. Years later, a second distillery, Miyagikyo, was opened in a different region of Japan to create a contrasting whisky style.

By operating multiple distilleries with different still shapes and production methods, Nikka can produce a wide variety of malt and grain whiskies. These spirits are then blended together to create the company’s distinctive range of Japanese whiskies.

Overview & History

Nikka Whisky was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, often regarded as the father of Japanese whisky. Taketsuru studied whisky production in Scotland in the early 1920s before returning to Japan to establish his own distillery.

The company’s first distillery, Yoichi, was built in Hokkaido because its climate and coastal conditions resembled Scotland. In 1969, Nikka expanded with a second distillery, Miyagikyo, located in a mountainous region of northern Honshu.

Today, Nikka is part of the Asahi Group and remains one of the two historic pillars of Japanese whisky alongside Suntory.
