A brief History

North Port, Highlands Region, Scotland. Founded in 1820.

North Port—often called Brechin Distillery—is one of those names that quietly sat in the background of Scotch whisky for nearly two centuries.

Founded in 1820 in Brechin, on the edge of the Highlands, it was never a large or heavily promoted distillery. Most of what it produced went straight into blends, doing its job without much fuss. And for a long time, that was enough.

Like a lot of distilleries from that era, it went through periods of closure and reopening, adapting to changing demand. It survived wars, economic shifts, and industry slowdowns—only to finally close for good in 1983.

After that, the site didn’t hang around. It was demolished, and what remains today is mostly memory and the occasional bottle that surfaces from old stock.

I tend to think of North Port as a working distillery rather than a headline one. It wasn’t built to stand out—but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t good.

Taste Profile

Malty / Cereal Fruity Sweet

North Port is known for its soft, balanced, and slightly dry character. You’ll usually find a gentle malt base, backed by light fruit—apple or pear—and a mild sweetness.

The finish tends to be clean, with a slightly dry edge rather than a long, heavy aftertaste.

Popular North Port Bottles

Because the distillery is closed, releases are limited and often appear in special collections:

  • North Port 20–30 Year Old (Rare Malts Series)
One of the more recognisable official releases.
  • North Port Vintage Bottlings
Older expressions released in limited quantities.
  • Independent Bottlings
Occasional releases from remaining casks, often at higher ages.

Distillery Facts

Overview & History

North Port Distillery was located in Brechin, Angus, and was founded in 1820. It was often referred to as Brechin Distillery, particularly in earlier records.

The distillery operated for over 160 years, primarily producing malt whisky for blends. Like many distilleries, it experienced multiple ownership changes and periods of closure.

North Port was eventually closed in 1983 during the major Scotch whisky downturn and later demolished in 1994, with the site redeveloped.

Production

  • Spirit Type: Single malt Scotch whisky
  • Region: Highlands (Eastern Highlands)
  • Stills: Copper pot stills
  • Cask Policy: Primarily ex-bourbon with some sherry influence
  • Primary Role: Supplying malt whisky for blends

The distillery was not widely promoted as a single malt during its operational life.

Whisky Style

North Port whisky is typically described as:

  • Medium-bodied
  • Malty and slightly earthy
  • Subtle fruit notes (apple, citrus)
  • Light spice
  • Dry, slightly austere finish

Older bottlings often show more complexity and depth.

Key Expressions

North Port was rarely bottled officially during its lifetime. Known releases include:

  • North Port / Brechin Rare Malts series
  • Independent bottlings from remaining casks
  • Occasional Diageo special releases

As a closed distillery, all bottles come from finite remaining stock.

Significance

North Port is one of the many lost distilleries of the 1980s whisky downturn, a period that reshaped the Scotch industry.

Its long history and relatively scarce surviving bottlings make it of interest to collectors, particularly those focused on closed distilleries and lesser-known Highland malts.
