A brief History
Old Smuggler, Scotland. Founded in 1971.
Old Smuggler is a long-standing blended Scotch whisky brand with roots going back to 1835. It was created by James and George Stodart, who named the whisky in tribute to the smugglers who once transported whisky across Scotland to avoid heavy taxes. These smugglers played a big role in keeping whisky alive during difficult periods in Scottish history.
From early on, Old Smuggler gained a reputation for quality and became particularly popular in export markets, especially in South America. Over time, it grew into one of the better-known blended Scotch brands outside the UK.
Today, Old Smuggler is owned by Gruppo Campari, and while it sits in the more accessible end of the whisky market, it still reflects the traditional idea of a smooth and balanced blended Scotch designed for everyday drinking.

Distillery Facts
Overview & History
Old Smuggler is a blended Scotch whisky brand created in 1835 by the Stodart brothers. The name reflects the history of illicit whisky smuggling in Scotland during the 18th and early 19th centuries, when high taxes led many distillers to operate illegally.
The brand became particularly popular in export markets such as the United States and South America. Today, Old Smuggler is owned by the Edrington Group, which also owns brands such as The Macallan and Highland Park.
