Overview & History

Penderyn Distillery is located in the Brecon Beacons National Park in Wales and is the country’s best-known whisky producer. The distillery was founded in the late 1990s, with production beginning in 2000, marking the revival of Welsh whisky after more than a century of absence.

The first Penderyn whisky was released in 2004, launched by HRH Prince Charles. Since then, Penderyn has expanded production and opened additional distillery sites in Llandudno and Swansea, helping establish a modern Welsh whisky industry.

Production

• Spirit Type: Welsh single malt whisky

• Distillation: Unique Faraday still (single copper pot still with rectification column)

• Water Source: Spring water from the Brecon Beacons

• Cask Policy: Primarily ex-bourbon maturation followed by finishing in wine casks

The Faraday still design produces a particularly light and high-purity spirit, often distilled to a higher strength than traditional Scotch.

Common finishing casks include Madeira, port, and sherry.

The Madeira Finish was the first widely released expression and remains the most recognised.

Significance

Penderyn is responsible for reviving Welsh whisky production in the modern era. Before its founding, Wales had no active whisky distilleries for over 100 years.

Its innovative still design and distinctive finishing programme have helped create a recognisable Welsh whisky style and establish Wales as a small but credible whisky-producing region.
