A brief History

Penderyn, Wales. Founded in 2000.

Penderyn Distillery is widely recognised as the distillery that revived whisky production in Wales. Located in the village of Penderyn in the Brecon Beacons National Park, the distillery began production in 2000, marking the return of Welsh whisky after more than a century without commercial distilling in the country.

The project started when a small group of friends discussed the idea of bringing Welsh whisky back while sitting in a local pub. That conversation eventually led to the creation of Penderyn Distillery. The first spirit ran from the stills in 2000, and the first official bottling was released in 2004.

Penderyn uses a distinctive Faraday still, designed to produce a very pure spirit. This method gives the whisky a lighter and fruitier style compared with many traditional Scotch whiskies. Since opening its original site, Penderyn has expanded with additional distilleries in Llandudno and Swansea, helping establish a growing Welsh whisky industry.

Taste Profile

Spicy

Fruity Sweet

Penderyn whiskies are often described as fresh and fruit-forward. Citrus notes and orchard fruits appear early, followed by honey sweetness and gentle vanilla from oak maturation.

The spirit produced in the Faraday still is typically smooth and elegant, with a light body and a touch of warming spice in the finish. The distillery often experiments with different cask finishes, including Madeira, port, and sherry casks, which add extra layers of flavour.

Distillery Facts

Overview & History

Penderyn Distillery is located in the Brecon Beacons National Park in Wales and is the country’s best-known whisky producer. The distillery was founded in the late 1990s, with production beginning in 2000, marking the revival of Welsh whisky after more than a century of absence.

The first Penderyn whisky was released in 2004, launched by HRH Prince Charles. Since then, Penderyn has expanded production and opened additional distillery sites in Llandudno and Swansea, helping establish a modern Welsh whisky industry.

Production

  • Spirit Type: Welsh single malt whisky

  • Distillation: Unique Faraday still (single copper pot still with rectification column)

  • Water Source: Spring water from the Brecon Beacons

  • Cask Policy: Primarily ex-bourbon maturation followed by finishing in wine casks

The Faraday still design produces a particularly light and high-purity spirit, often distilled to a higher strength than traditional Scotch.

Common finishing casks include Madeira, port, and sherry.

Whisky Style

Penderyn whisky typically shows:

  • Light, elegant body

  • Honey and vanilla sweetness

  • Citrus and orchard fruit

  • Tropical fruit notes

  • Gentle oak spice

The spirit is known for its clean, refined profile and strong influence from finishing casks.

Key Expressions

  • Penderyn Madeira Finish – Core flagship release

  • Penderyn Portwood – Port cask finished expression

  • Penderyn Sherrywood – Richer sherry maturation

  • Penderyn Peated – Lightly smoky Welsh malt

The Madeira Finish was the first widely released expression and remains the most recognised.

Significance

Penderyn is responsible for reviving Welsh whisky production in the modern era. Before its founding, Wales had no active whisky distilleries for over 100 years.

Its innovative still design and distinctive finishing programme have helped create a recognisable Welsh whisky style and establish Wales as a small but credible whisky-producing region.
