A brief History
Port Dundas, Lowlands Region, Scotland. Founded in 1811.
Port Dundas is one of those names that quietly powered the whisky industry without ever really stepping into the spotlight.
Located in Glasgow, it was founded in 1811 and grew into one of the largest grain whisky distilleries in Scotland. This wasn’t a small, character-led single malt operation. It was industrial, efficient, and built to supply the backbone of blended Scotch.
And that’s exactly what it did.
For over 200 years, Port Dundas produced grain whisky used in blends—most notably for big names like Johnnie Walker. You probably won’t have seen “Port Dundas” on many labels, but chances are you’ve tasted it without realising.
The distillery finally closed in 2010, as production was consolidated elsewhere. The buildings were later demolished, marking the end of a major piece of Glasgow’s whisky history.
I tend to think of Port Dundas as the kind of distillery that didn’t need attention to be important. It just did the job—on a massive scale.

Port Dundas whisky is known for its light, smooth, and slightly sweet character. You’ll often get soft vanilla and caramel notes, backed by a gentle cereal base. The oak tends to be mild, adding a bit of structure without making the whisky feel heavy.
On its own, it’s easy to drink but fairly subtle. In blends, it works as a base—rounding things out and carrying other flavours.
