A brief History

Port Ellen, Islay Region, Scotland. Founded in 1825.

Port Ellen is one of the most talked-about names in Scotch whisky, even though for many years it wasn’t producing anything at all. The distillery sits on the south coast of Islay, near the village of Port Ellen, and was originally founded in 1825 by Alexander Kerr Mackay.

It operated for well over a century before closing in 1983, during a period when demand for Scotch whisky had dropped sharply. Like several other distilleries at the time, it was shut down and left silent.

But here’s the twist — the whisky it had already produced didn’t disappear. As casks matured, Port Ellen gained a reputation for being something special. Over time, it became one of the most collectible and sought-after “lost” distilleries, with official releases appearing in limited quantities.

In recent years, plans to rebuild and reopen Port Ellen have brought it back into focus. It’s now part of Diageo’s efforts to bring historic distilleries back to life, blending old identity with modern production.

Taste Profile

Oaky / Woody Peaty / Smoky Briny / Maritime

Port Ellen whiskies are known for a distinctive balance of peat smoke and coastal influence. The smoke tends to be dry and slightly ashy, rather than overly heavy, with citrus notes cutting through to keep things fresh.

There’s also a clear maritime character — hints of salt and sea air — which ties the whisky closely to its Islay location. With age, the whisky develops deeper oak and spice, adding more structure without losing its core character.

Distillery Facts

Overview & History

Port Ellen Distillery is located on the south coast of Islay and was originally founded in 1825 by Alexander Kerr MacKay.

The distillery became known for producing a classic Islay peated style, but it was closed in 1983 during a major downturn in the Scotch whisky industry. Despite its closure, remaining stocks became highly sought after, and Port Ellen developed a strong reputation among collectors and enthusiasts.

In 2017, Diageo announced plans to rebuild the distillery, and it officially reopened in 2024, marking one of the most significant revivals in modern Scotch whisky.

Production

  • Spirit Type: Single malt Scotch whisky
  • Region: Islay
  • Peat Level: Heavily peated
  • Stills: Newly built copper pot stills (modern design inspired by original)
  • Associated Facility: Port Ellen Maltings (supplies peated barley to many Islay distilleries)

The adjacent maltings remain one of the most important sources of peated barley for Islay whisky production.

Whisky Style

Classic Port Ellen whisky is typically described as:

  • Elegant peat smoke (less aggressive than some Islay malts)
  • Coastal salinity
  • Lemon and citrus notes
  • Dry, ashy finish
  • Refined, balanced structure

It is often considered a more subtle and complex style of Islay peat.

Key Expressions

  • Port Ellen Annual Releases (Diageo Special Releases) – Highly collectible bottlings
  • Rare independent bottlings from pre-1983 stock

New spirit from the reopened distillery will require years of maturation before official releases become widely available.

Significance

Port Ellen is one of the most famous “closed distilleries” in Scotch whisky history. Its rarity and reputation have made its bottles highly collectible and valuable.

The reopening of the distillery is a major event for the whisky industry, restoring a legendary Islay name while combining historical identity with modern production techniques.
