A brief History

Rebel Yell, Kentucky Region, USA. Founded in 1849.

Rebel Yell is one of those bourbons that doesn’t try to hide what it is. Straightforward, slightly bold, and built to be easy to drink.

The name itself has been around since 1849, originally linked to the Stitzel-Weller distillery in Kentucky. That matters because Stitzel-Weller was known for wheated bourbon—a style that swaps rye for wheat in the mash bill, usually resulting in a softer, smoother flavour.

Over time, ownership changed and production moved, but that core idea stuck. Rebel Yell still leans into that wheated style, keeping things approachable rather than aggressive.

It’s now owned by Luxco, and in more recent years, the brand has been shortened simply to “Rebel” in some markets. Same whisky, slightly updated presentation.

I’d describe Rebel Yell as a bourbon that knows its place. It’s not trying to compete with premium limited releases—it’s built for regular drinking, and it does that well.

Taste Profile

Sweet

Malty / Cereal Oaky / Woody

Rebel Yell is known for its smooth, mellow character. You’ll usually get vanilla and caramel up front, followed by a soft sweetness that comes from the wheat. There’s less sharp spice compared to rye-based bourbons, which makes it easier to sip.

The oak comes through towards the finish, giving a bit of structure without making it heavy.

Distillery Facts

Overview & History

Rebel Yell is a Kentucky straight bourbon brand originally introduced in 1936 by the Stitzel-Weller Distillery. It was initially positioned as a premium bourbon and was reportedly created as a private label for a specific Southern market.

The brand later became part of the wheated bourbon tradition associated with Stitzel-Weller, using wheat instead of rye as the secondary grain.

After several ownership changes, the brand is now produced by Lux Row Distillers in Bardstown, Kentucky. In recent years, the name has often been shortened to “Rebel Bourbon” in branding.

Production

  • Category: Kentucky Straight Bourbon
  • Distillery: Lux Row Distillers
  • Mash Bill: Wheated bourbon (corn, wheat, malted barley)
  • Distillation: Column still followed by a doubler
  • Barrels: New charred American oak

The use of wheat results in a softer, sweeter flavour profile compared with rye-based bourbons.

Whisky Style

Rebel Yell bourbon typically shows:

  • Sweet caramel and vanilla
  • Honey and light fruit
  • Soft oak
  • Mild spice
  • Smooth, easy-drinking finish

The profile is approachable and less spice-forward than traditional high-rye bourbons.

Key Expressions

  • Rebel 100 Bourbon – Core higher-proof expression
  • Rebel Small Batch Reserve – More premium release
  • Rebel Single Barrel – Limited individual barrel bottlings
  • Flavoured variants and special editions

The brand has expanded into both standard and flavoured whiskey segments.

Significance

Rebel Yell is part of the historic wheated bourbon lineage, linked to the legacy of Stitzel-Weller.

Today, it represents a more accessible entry point into wheated bourbon, offering a softer alternative to more spice-driven styles.
