A brief History
Royal Brackla, Highlands Region, Scotland. Founded in 1812.
Royal Brackla Distillery sits near Cawdor in the Scottish Highlands, not far from Inverness. It was founded in 1812 by Captain William Fraser, and it holds a rare place in Scotch whisky history. In 1833, it became the first distillery to receive a Royal Warrant from King William IV, earning the right to use the word “Royal” in its name.
That royal connection helped build its reputation early on, and the whisky became associated with quality and refinement. Over time, however, much of Royal Brackla’s production was directed into blended Scotch, which meant it spent years quietly working behind the scenes rather than being widely known as a single malt.
In recent years, official bottlings have become more available, giving whisky drinkers a clearer idea of the distillery’s character. Today, Royal Brackla is part of the Bacardi-owned John Dewar & Sons portfolio, alongside several other Scotch distilleries.

Significance
Royal Brackla’s Royal Warrant makes it one of the few Scotch distilleries with direct historical ties to the British monarchy.
Its role within Dewar’s blends and its modern repositioning as a sherry-forward single malt have helped reintroduce the distillery to a wider audience after many years of being relatively under the radar.
