A brief History
Springbank, Cambletown Region, Scotland. Founded in 1828
Campbeltown’s Crown Jewel
Tucked away in the wee town of Campbeltown, Springbank doesn’t shout for attention — it doesn’t need to. Among whisky lovers, it’s basically a cult classic. And once you’ve tried it, you’ll understand why.
Founded in 1828, Springbank is one of the last remaining distilleries in what was once the whisky capital of the world. While Campbeltown had over 30 distilleries in its heyday, only three remain — and Springbank is by far the best known. But what makes it really special is how little it’s changed.
Still family-owned by J&A Mitchell & Co, Springbank does everything in-house: malting, milling, mashing, fermenting, distilling, maturing, bottling — the works. That old-school approach gives its whisky a gritty, honest character you just don’t get from bigger, slicker operations.
And the result? A whisky that’s oily, funky, complex, and utterly unforgettable.
Flavour Profile: Earthy, Oily, and Deeply Complex
Springbank isn’t easy-drinking whisky — it’s interesting whisky. Each dram has layers to unpack: salt, smoke, spice, cereal, you name it. It’s not for everyone, but for many, it’s the holy grail.Glenfiddich is Speyside through and through — clean, elegant, and fruit-forward. But dig into the range, and you’ll find some rich surprises.GlenAllachie brings a lot to the glass — especially if you’re into sherried malts that still manage to balance sweetness with spice and oak depth.

Distillery Facts
Overview & History
Springbank Distillery is located in Campbeltown, on Scotland’s Kintyre peninsula, and was founded in 1828 by Archibald Mitchell.
It remains one of the few Scotch distilleries still independently owned by the founding family, operated by J. & A. Mitchell & Co. Springbank is widely regarded as one of the most traditional distilleries in Scotland.
Campbeltown was once considered the whisky capital of the world, with more than 30 distilleries operating in the region during the 19th century. Springbank is now one of the key distilleries preserving the region’s whisky identity.
Production
- Spirit Type: Single malt Scotch whisky
- Region: Campbeltown
- Malting: Partial on-site floor malting
- Distillation: Unique two-and-a-half-times distillation
- Cask Policy: Mix of ex-bourbon, sherry, rum, and other casks
Springbank is unusual because it carries out nearly the entire whisky-making process on-site, including malting, distillation, maturation, and bottling.
Whisky Style
Springbank whisky typically shows:
- Oily, full-bodied texture
- Maritime salinity
- Malt sweetness
- Gentle peat smoke
- Complex, layered finish
The style balances coastal character, subtle smoke, and rich texture.
