A brief History

Strathearn, Highlands Region, Scotland. Founded in 2019.

Strathearn Distillery is one of the smallest whisky distilleries in Scotland, and that’s very much part of its identity. It’s based in Perthshire, just outside the village of Methven, and was founded in 2013 as a small, hands-on operation focused on craft production.

From the beginning, Strathearn took a different route to large-scale distilleries. Everything was done in small batches, with close attention paid to each stage — from fermentation through to cask selection. The aim was to create whisky with character rather than volume.

In 2019, the distillery was taken over by Douglas Laing & Co, an independent bottler with a strong reputation in Scotch whisky. Since then, production has continued with a focus on maintaining that small-scale approach while gradually building a more defined single malt range.

It’s a distillery that feels closer to a workshop than a factory.

Taste Profile

Oaky / Woody Fruity Sweet

Strathearn whiskies tend to be soft and rounded. You’ll usually pick up honey sweetness, light fruit notes like apple and pear, and a gentle vanilla character from the cask.

Because of the small-batch approach, the whisky often feels slightly more textured, with flavours that come through clearly without being overpowering. It’s more about balance than intensity.

Distillery Facts

Overview & History

Strathearn Distillery is a small craft distillery located in Perthshire, Scotland, and was founded in 2013.

It was one of the early wave of new small-scale Scottish distilleries, focusing on handcrafted production rather than large-volume output. In 2019, the distillery was acquired by Douglas Laing & Co., an independent bottler that has since expanded and developed the brand.

Strathearn has built a reputation around small batch production and attention to detail, positioning itself differently from industrial-scale distilleries.

Production

  • Spirit Type: Single malt Scotch whisky
  • Stills: Small copper pot stills
  • Scale: Very small batch production
  • Cask Policy: Mix of ex-bourbon, sherry, and virgin oak
  • Approach: Hands-on, craft-led distillation

The small stills and batch sizes allow for close control over the spirit character.

Whisky Style

Strathearn whisky typically shows:

  • Medium body
  • Malty sweetness
  • Orchard fruit notes
  • Vanilla and light spice
  • Soft, rounded finish

The profile is balanced and approachable, with a focus on clarity rather than heavy peat or extreme cask influence.

Key Expressions

  • Early small batch releases (pre-acquisition)
  • Strathearn Single Malt – Modern core direction under Douglas Laing
  • Limited editions and cask variations

The range is still developing as stocks mature.

Significance

Strathearn represents the modern craft distilling movement in Scotland, where small-scale production and experimentation play a larger role.

Its acquisition by Douglas Laing highlights a broader trend of independent bottlers moving into full distillery ownership, combining maturation expertise with in-house spirit production.
