A brief History
Tamdhu, Speyside Region, Scotland. Founded in 1897.
Tamdhu Distillery sits on the banks of the River Spey in Speyside, near the village of Knockando. It was founded in 1897 by a group of whisky blenders who wanted a reliable supply of quality malt whisky. From the beginning, Tamdhu was built with a clear purpose — and it’s stuck to that focus ever since.
The distillery has had a slightly stop-start history, with periods of closure during the late 20th century. However, things changed when it was taken over by Ian Macleod Distillers in 2011, who repositioned Tamdhu with a very clear identity: 100% sherry cask maturation.
That decision gave the distillery a strong point of difference. Instead of mixing cask types, Tamdhu focuses entirely on whisky matured in Oloroso sherry casks from Spain, which has shaped its modern style and helped it stand out in a crowded Speyside market.

| Rich / Chocolatey | Fruity | Spicy |
Tamdhu is known for its rich, sherry-driven character. You’ll usually notice deep dried fruit notes like raisins and figs, followed by dark chocolate and warming spice.
The exclusive use of Oloroso sherry casks gives the whisky a fuller body and a darker, more layered flavour profile compared with lighter Speyside malts. There’s a balance of sweetness and spice, with oak adding structure through the finish.
