A brief History

Tobermory, Island Region, Scotland. Founded in late 1798.

Tobermory Distillery: Island Malt from the Isle of Mull

Tobermory Distillery sits right on the harbour in the colourful fishing town of Tobermory, on the Isle of Mull. That makes it part of Scotland’s Islands whisky region — a category known for coastal character and individuality rather than one fixed flavour profile.

Founded in 1798, Tobermory is one of the oldest licensed distilleries in Scotland. Its history hasn’t been smooth; there have been closures, ownership changes, and long silent periods. But today it’s firmly active and producing two distinct styles of single malt under one roof.

Here’s where it gets interesting. Tobermory makes:

  • Unpeated island single malt under the Tobermory name

  • Heavily peated single malt under the name Ledaig

So you effectively get two personalities from one distillery. For UK drinkers who like island whisky but want options — smoke or no smoke — Tobermory offers both.

Distillery Facts

Overview & History

Tobermory Distillery is located in the harbour town of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull and was founded in 1798, making it one of the oldest licensed distilleries in Scotland.

The distillery has experienced multiple ownership changes and several periods of closure throughout its history. It is currently owned by Distell.

Tobermory produces two distinct whisky styles:

  • Tobermory – Unpeated single malt
  • Ledaig – Heavily peated single malt

This dual-production approach gives the distillery a broader stylistic range than many Scotch producers.

Production

  • Spirit Type: Single malt Scotch whisky
  • Region: Islands
  • Styles: Unpeated and heavily peated
  • Stills: Copper pot stills
  • Cask Policy: Bourbon, sherry, and wine cask maturation

The distillery produces spirit with a slightly oily, maritime character.

Whisky Style

Tobermory (Unpeated)

Typically shows:

  • Medium body
  • Orchard fruit and citrus
  • Malt sweetness
  • Coastal salinity
  • Light spice

Ledaig (Peated)

Typically shows:

  • Heavy peat smoke
  • Maritime and mineral notes
  • Pepper and spice
  • Earthy character
  • Long smoky finish

Ledaig is significantly more intense and smoky than the Tobermory range.

Key Expressions

Tobermory

  • Tobermory 12 Year Old
  • Tobermory 18 Year Old

Ledaig

  • Ledaig 10 Year Old
  • Ledaig Sinclair Series

Both styles also appear in limited editions and wine cask finishes.

Significance

Tobermory is important for preserving whisky production on the Isle of Mull, one of Scotland’s smaller whisky-producing islands.

Its production of both unpeated and heavily peated spirit makes it one of the more stylistically diverse island distilleries.
