Everything you need to know about Tweedale Distillery

A brief History

Tweedale, Scotland. Founded in 1820.

Tweeddale Whisky: A Borders Blend with Family Roots

Tweedale Whisky (often written as The Tweeddale) comes from the Scottish Borders, not from a single Highland or Speyside distillery. It’s a blended Scotch whisky brand, revived from a 19th-century family recipe originally created in Coldstream, near the River Tweed.

The modern brand was reintroduced by the descendants of the original blender, using historical blending notes as inspiration. Rather than chasing big peat or heavy sherry influence, Tweeddale leans into balance, grain sweetness, and aged malt components. Many of its releases include a relatively high proportion of mature grain whisky, which gives the blend a smoother, silkier feel.

For UK drinkers who enjoy blends but want something a little more thoughtful than supermarket standard bottlings, Tweeddale sits in that middle ground. It’s still a blend — approachable and balanced — but often bottled at slightly higher strengths and with clearer age statements.

Taste Profile

Sweet

Malty / Cereal Fruity

Tweeddale blends are known for a smooth, slightly richer blended style, with noticeable grain influence and gentle malt depth.

Expect vanilla and honey from the grain whisky, backed by light orchard fruit and soft malt character. Oak tends to be present but not dominant, giving a rounded finish rather than a sharp edge.

Distillery Facts

Overview & History

Tweeddale is a revived Scotch whisky brand based on historic blending recipes dating back to the 19th century.

The modern brand was recreated by Alasdair Day, founder of The Tweeddale Whisky Company, after discovering family blending records connected to his great-grandfather, Richard Day, a whisky merchant and blender in the Scottish Borders.

Tweeddale focuses on traditional-style blended Scotch whisky with an emphasis on older malt content and layered blending.

Production

  • Category: Blended Scotch whisky and blended malt Scotch whisky
  • Production Style: Small-batch blending
  • Components: Combination of aged malt and grain whiskies
  • Cask Policy: Bourbon, sherry, and wine cask influences

The company sources mature whisky and blends it according to specific flavour objectives inspired by historical recipes.

Whisky Style

Tweeddale whiskies typically show:

  • Rich malt-forward profile
  • Honey and dried fruit sweetness
  • Soft spice
  • Layered oak influence
  • Balanced, rounded finish

Compared with many mass-market blends, Tweeddale generally contains a higher proportion of malt whisky.

Key Expressions

  • Tweeddale “A Blend of Aged Malts and Grain” – Core expression
  • Tweeddale Grain of Truth – Grain-focused release
  • Tweeddale Evolution – More cask-influenced style
  • Limited small-batch and cask-finished releases

The range focuses on traditional blending with modern presentation.

Significance

Tweeddale represents the revival of heritage blending traditions, using historical family recipes as inspiration.

It reflects a broader trend within Scotch whisky where smaller companies are reintroducing premium blended whisky with greater transparency and higher malt content.
