Everything you need to know about Yarm Distillery

A brief History

Yarm, England. Founded in 2018

Yarm Distillery: Yorkshire Craft Spirit with Whisky Ambition

There’s something quietly confident about Yarm Distillery. No shouting. No gimmicks. Just a small Yorkshire distillery getting on with making good spirits — and now, slowly, thoughtfully, whisky too. Tucked away in the market town of Yarm, on the edge of the River Tees, this is a place that feels grounded. You sense it the moment you read about them, and even more when you taste what they make.

Founded in 2017, Yarm Distillery started life producing gin, vodka, and liqueurs, all made in-house and with clear attention to detail. Whisky came later. Sensibly so. Rather than rushing a release, Yarm took the long view — laying down spirit, learning how it behaves in cask, and letting time do its thing.

Their approach to whisky feels very English. Patient. Curious. Slightly understated. You won’t find big smoke or wild peat here. Instead, the focus leans towards balance, soft sweetness, and gentle spice. The kind of whisky you sit with rather than analyse. If you like the idea of English whisky that feels calm, considered, and rooted in place, Yarm is one to watch — and, I’d say, one to taste early.

Flavour Profile:

Oaky/ Woody

Oaky / Woody
Sweet

Yarm Distillery’s whisky style is still developing, but early releases and cask samples point towards a clean, approachable, and well-balanced character.

Yarm whisky leans into soft sweetness and gentle oak rather than extremes. Think light vanilla, warm cereal notes, a touch of honeyed sweetness, and a calm, drying wood finish. It’s the sort of whisky that doesn’t rush you — and doesn’t need to.

Yarm’s whisky output is small and evolving, so releases tend to be limited and seasonal. Alongside whisky, their wider spirits range has built a strong local following.

Popular and Notable Releases:

  • Yarm Distillery English Whisky (Limited Releases)
Soft sweetness, malted barley, gentle oak

  • Yarm Distillery Cask Samples
Early looks at the house style — fresh, cereal-led, lightly spiced

  • Yarm London Dry Gin
Classic juniper backbone with clean citrus lift

  • Yarm Vodka
    Smooth, neutral, and well-made

For whisky fans, the appeal lies in watching the journey. These are early chapters, not the final book.

Distillery Facts

Overview & History

Yarm Distillery is a small English craft distillery based in Yarm, North Yorkshire.

The distillery forms part of the newer generation of English whisky producers developing regional whisky identities outside traditional Scotch whisky regions. Like many modern UK craft distilleries, it began with smaller-scale spirits production before expanding whisky operations.

Production remains relatively limited and focused on small-batch releases.

Production

  • Spirit Type: English whisky
  • Scale: Craft, small-batch production
  • Stills: Copper pot stills
  • Cask Policy: Bourbon and specialty cask maturation

The distillery focuses on gradual stock development while building its whisky range.

Whisky Style

Yarm whiskies are generally described as:

  • Malt-forward
  • Vanilla and caramel-led
  • Light fruit character
  • Gentle spice
  • Soft oak influence

The style aligns with many younger English single malt distilleries emphasising approachable profiles.

Key Expressions

  • Small batch English whisky releases
  • Limited edition bottlings
  • Early-stage craft whisky expressions

The portfolio is still developing as stocks continue to mature.

Significance

Yarm Distillery reflects the continued expansion of the English whisky category, particularly the emergence of smaller regional producers outside major whisky centres.

Its development contributes to the broader diversification of whisky production across England.
