Everything you need to know about Adelphi Distillery
Most popular bottles from the bottler
A brief History
Adelphi, Highlands Region, Scotland. Founded in 1826.
Adelphi is best known as an independent bottler of Scotch whisky, but its story actually starts with a distillery. The original Adelphi Distillery was founded in 1826 in Glasgow, though it eventually closed in the early 1900s. The name was later revived, not to restart the same distillery, but to focus on selecting and bottling whisky from across Scotland.
Modern Adelphi built its reputation by choosing single casks and small batch releases, often bottled at natural strength. The approach is quite straightforward — find good casks and bottle them without trying to smooth everything out.
More recently, Adelphi has returned to distilling through its ownership of Ardnamurchan Distillery, located on the west coast of Scotland. That gives the company a link between selecting whisky and producing it.
It’s a mix of old name, independent bottling, and modern distilling.

| Oaky / Woody | Fruity | Spicy |
Adelphi bottlings can vary quite a lot because they come from different distilleries. That said, many of their releases focus on well-structured flavours — fruit, spice, and oak working together.
You’ll often find whiskies that feel a bit more natural and less adjusted, especially as many are bottled at higher strength. Some lean rich and sherried, others lighter and more spirit-driven, depending on the cask.

Distillery Facts
Overview & History
Adelphi Distillery Ltd is a Scottish whisky company best known as a high-end independent bottler, originally established in the 19th century and revived in 1993.
The original Adelphi distillery operated in Glasgow from 1826 to 1907. The modern company revived the name, focusing on sourcing and bottling rare and high-quality casks from distilleries across Scotland.
In 2014, Adelphi expanded into production by building Ardnamurchan Distillery, marking its transition from bottler to full distillery operator.
Production
- Primary Role: Independent bottler of Scotch whisky
- Sourcing: Casks acquired from various distilleries
- Bottling Style: Typically single cask or small batch
- Philosophy: Minimal intervention (often natural colour, non-chill filtered)
Through Ardnamurchan Distillery:
- Spirit Type: Single malt Scotch whisky
- Approach: Modern, sustainability-focused production
Adelphi is known for strict cask selection, often rejecting a large percentage of potential casks.
Whisky Style
As an independent bottler, Adelphi does not have a single house style. However, its releases are typically:
- High quality and cask-driven
- Full-flavoured and expressive
- Often higher strength
- Reflective of individual distillery character
Ardnamurchan spirit tends to show:
- Balanced peat and fruit
- Coastal influence
- Clean, structured profile
Key Expressions
- Adelphi Single Cask Releases – Limited, often rare bottlings
- Private Stock bottlings – Premium selections
- Ardnamurchan Single Malt – Core distillery output
- Ardnamurchan AD/ series releases (peated and unpeated variants)
Most Adelphi releases are limited and vary widely.
Significance
Adelphi is one of the most respected independent bottlers in Scotch whisky, known for rigorous cask selection and high standards.
Its move into distilling with Ardnamurchan reflects a broader industry trend where bottlers seek greater control over production, combining sourcing expertise with in-house whisky creation.
