Game of Thrones Whisky Oban Night’s Watch Tasting Review

Why This One?

We've already marched through Clynelish (House Tyrell), Lagavulin (House Lannister) and Talisker (House Greyjoy). Oban Night's Watch is fourth up in the Game of Thrones whisky set. Oban is a West Coast distillery that often goes under the radar. Pairing it with the Night's Watch makes sense: sturdy, a bit brooding, built for cold evenings.

First Sniff

I poured a measure and waited two minutes. In plain words I got:

  • Dark fruit – like raisins in a Christmas cake.

  • Caramel – soft, not burnt.

  • Hint of smoke – very light, almost hidden.

Good sign: nothing sharp or boozy in the nose.

Taste (No Fancy Talk)

  1. Sweet malt – syrup and oat biscuit.

  2. Spice – gentle cinnamon, not chilli.

  3. Dry oak finish – hangs on for a while, a touch of smoke at the end.

It’s warming, smooth, and a bit like eating sticky toffee pudding near a log fire.

How the Line-Up Looks Now

Bottle Style ABV My Score One-Word Vibe
Lagavulin Lannister Heavy peat 46 % 8.5 Fiery
Oban Night’s Watch Rich malt 43 % 7.8 Dark
Clynelish Tyrell Light, coastal 51.2 % 7.5 Fresh
Talisker Greyjoy Briny pepper 45.8 % 7.0 Stormy

More bottles to come, but Oban slides in just behind Lagavulin.

Easy Food Matches

  • Sticky toffee pudding – mirror the caramel notes.

  • Blue cheese – contrast the sweet malt.

  • Salted nuts – simple but spot-on.

Good to Know

  • Adding a splash of water brings out more dark fruit.

  • Ice flattens the spice; I’d skip it.

  • Once opened, keep the bottle upright and out of light; flavour stays solid for a year.

Bottle or Full Set?

If you like malt-forward drams with a soft edge, grab a bottle. But the more brilliant move is still the full Game of Thrones whisky set – eight stories, and a tasting night with friends.

Final Sip

Oban Night’s Watch is like a slow-burn campfire tale: rich, steady, a little smoky at the finish. I give it 7.8 out of 10. Great for late evenings when the house is quiet, and you want something cosy but not too sweet.
