About Jack Daniels Distillery

A brief History

Jack Daniel's, Tennessee, USA. Founded in 1866

Lynchburg’s Legend — More Than Just a Rock ‘n’ Roll Bottle

Jack Daniel’s isn’t just a bottle on the back of every bar — it’s a piece of Americana. But here’s what most people don’t realise: behind the black label and the global fame, Jack Daniel’s is still made in a tiny town called Lynchburg, Tennessee, using water from a limestone cave and a process that hasn’t changed much since the 1800s.

Founded in 1866 by Jasper Newton “Jack” Daniel, this is officially the oldest registered distillery in the United States. And though the marketing has done its job (who hasn’t seen a Jack & Coke?), the real story is about craft. Jack Daniel’s is made with a unique twist — it’s filtered through 10 feet of charcoal before ageing, in a method called the Lincoln County Process, which gives it that famously smooth, slightly sweet taste.

Love it or not, Jack is the gateway whiskey for millions — but dig a little deeper, and you’ll find a brand that takes its traditions seriously, even if the vibe is laid-back.

Taste Profile

Sweet

Nutty

Spicy

Jack Daniel’s is famously mellow. That’s the charcoal at work — smoothing out the spirit before it even hits the barrel. While it doesn’t have the weight or depth of a sherry-matured Scotch, it does have mass appeal for a reason: it’s clean, sweet, and plays well with mixers and purists.

Jack Daniel’s is known for its mellow, approachable Tennessee whiskey — sweet and spicy, with a nutty edge. The distillery’s charcoal filtering and new American oak barrels create a soft, rounded style. Key flavour characteristics include:

  • Caramel and toasted vanilla

  • Roasted nuts and baking spice

  • Hints of charred oak and maple

  • Smooth finish with just enough heat

There’s more to Jack than the classic black label. Here are some highlights worth knowing — whether you’re sipping neat or mixing.

Old No. 7 (Black Label) 40% Vanilla, banana bread, toasted oak, light spice
Gentleman Jack 40% Double charcoal mellowed – smoother, creamier, easy sipper
Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Select 47% More depth – spice, oak, toasted nuts, caramel richness
Jack Daniel’s Bonded 50% Big, bold flavours – banana, baking spice, smoky wood
Tennessee Honey / Fire 35% Flavoured expressions – sweetened with honey or cinnamon heat

If you’ve only tried the basic bottle — Single Barrel Select is a real eye-opener. More structure, more complexity, and way more flavour.

Oh yes — and it’s not just a distillery tour, it’s an experience. Even though Lynchburg is in a dry county (yep, you read that right), you can still visit, taste, and tour the historic distillery. It’s one of the most visited whisky distilleries in the world — and they make it fun.

Opening Times:

  • Monday to Sunday: 9:00am – 4:30pm

  • Multiple tour options available — from heritage tours to tasting-only experiences.

It’s friendly, a bit quirky, and packed with Jack Daniel’s trivia and old-school Americana charm.

Ownership Timeline

Current Owner:

  • Brown-Forman Corporation (Since 1956) — a major US spirits company that also owns Woodford Reserve and Old Forester.

Founder:

  • Jasper Newton “Jack” Daniel, established the distillery in 1866.

Legacy:
Despite its global success, Jack Daniel’s is still made in Lynchburg, still uses cave spring water, and still filters every drop through sugar maple charcoal. The scale may be massive, but the soul remains small-town.
