What is Rum Made From?

The main ingredient to make rum is sugar cane, which can be processed through different ways. The spirit can be made from sugarcane molasses or sugarcane juice. 

  • Molasses is a byproduct of sugar refining and is the most common base for making rum. 

  • Freshly pressed juice from sugarcane stalks can also be fermented to produce rum. 

  • Sugarcane syrup is created early in the sugar production process and can serve as another base for rum.

After distillation, the rum is clear and typically aged in vessels, such as bourbon casks, wooden casks or stainless steel tanks. The choice of aging vessel will influence the final flavour and character of the rum.
