Masataka Taketsuru was the first Japanese person to master the art of whisky-making. After learning how to make whisky in Speyside, Scotland, during university while apprenticing at three distilleries. In 1934, years after returning to Japan with his wife, Nikka distillery was born.
Nikka Distillery
Unlike many whisky distributors, there are multiple Nikka distilleries across Japan. These include the renowned Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries. Each has a bespoke process based on the whisky spirit type.
Nikka whiskey pairs exceptionally well with scallops, roasted duck and lamb curry. For dessert or light snack, try parfait with sweet pineapple and dark chocolate. To bring out the traditional apple flavour, add some zest to your dishes.
Nikka Whisky is a Japanese whisky brand known for its single malts and blended whiskies. It was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, often called the "Father of Japanese Whisky." The Nikka Whisky Distilling Co also owns the Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries. One of Nikka’s most popular releases is Nikka From the Barrel. This is a bold blended whisky containing 40% single malts from the Miyagikyo and Yoichi distilleries and 60% Coffey grain spirit.
Nikka whisky is known for its light, fruity sweetness. Nikka From the Barrel, is a blend of malt whisky from Yoichi Distillery and grain whisky from Miyagikyo Distillery. After blending, it’s aged in oak casks for a few months before being adjusted to a consistent ABV and bottled. On the palate, it has a sherry-forward character, with layers of berries and dark dried fruits.
