Suntory Whisky

An exquisite spirit with a traditional design, Suntory whisky is suitable for every connoisseur’s display. The distillery matures each batch in a variety of casks, from American ex-bourbon, Spanish barrels and Japanese Mizunara, boasting a complex flavour profile.

Yamazaki distillery, also called Suntory, was founded in 1899 by Shinjiro Torii. The distillery originally produced wine, inspired by Western culture. It wasn’t until 1923 when Suntory released whisky. The distillery soon became a household name for both wine and whisky, and still are to this day.

Yamazaki Distillery

Suntory whisky doesn’t have one strict whisky-making process. Each batch follows a bespoke method, from the 16 different pot stills to the maturation casks and period. However, their water is always sourced from one of Japan's 100 best natural mineral waters.

Whisky from Yamazaki distillery pairs beautifully with soy sauce-based dishes. If seafood is not your preference, you may find a red meat dinner satisfying instead. As the aroma is quite sweet, we recommend savoury or rich dessert to help balance the flavours.

What is the history of Suntory Whisky?

Suntory Whisky has a rich history spanning over a century, beginning when Shinjiro Torii established Yamazaki Distillery in 1923. This was Japan’s first malt whisky distillery. Suntory introduced Japan’s first whisky, Shirofuda, followed by the iconic Kakubin ("square bottle") whisky, which remains a best-seller. The company continued to grow with the opening of the Chita Distillery in 1972 and the Hakushu Distillery in 1973. Suntory has introduced landmark whiskies such as Yamazaki Single Malt (1984).

Where is Suntory Whisky produced?

Suntory Whisky is produced at two distilleries in Japan. The Suntory Yamazaki Distillery is located on the outskirts of Kyoto, at the foot of Mt Tennozan. The Suntory Hakushu Distillery is situated at the foot of the Japan Southern Alps. Both distilleries are open to the public for tours and visits.

What food pairings work well with Suntory Whisky?

Suntory Whiskies, especially Toki and Hakushu, pair well with a variety of foods, particularly Japanese cuisine. They are an excellent match for dishes such as tempura, sushi and soy sauce-based dishes. Suntory whiskies also complement lighter pub foods, such as yakitori and are particularly suited to fish and sushi.
